About Alghero
Alghero is situated on the northwest coast of Sardinia, with beautiful beaches,
mouth watering local cuisine on offer in a wide choice of restaurants and an
array of places of interest to visit, it is such a fantastic place for a holiday,
that even the Italians choose to holiday there themselves!
Boasting clear blue and emerald waters, white, soft sandy beaches, secluded bays
and pine forests, Alghero is a lively and attractive city with the old town housing
narrow cobbled streets, designer boutiques and a good selection of eateries and
bars. Much of the architecture is Catalan-Gothic with wrought iron balconies
and flamboyant churches, all adding to the character of this beautiful treasure
trove.
Founded in the 12th century, Alghero was occupied by the Catalans for over
four hundred years and the Spanish influence is still evident today. Street signs
are still written in Catalan and the local dialect still strongly resembles it
too. The cuisine is still heavily influenced by the Catalan era, with dishes
such as Paella and lobster alla Catalana frequenting many menus.
Being a traditional
fishing port, the restaurants offer a wide variety of tasty fish dishes and stallholders
in the harbour selling delicacies such as sea urchins. As well as the delicacies
available, you will find stallholders selling the work of local craftsmen, which
will include pottery and woodwork, and not forgetting the polished red coral
that is also sold in the many boutiques and craft shops.
Nightlife in Alghero
is likely to include a few drinks in one of the local bars, perhaps sipping a
cocktail overlooking the harbour from the old town, followed by a sumptuous meal
with some local wine. (The vineyards here produce some of the most fragrant wines
in all Sardinia) A perfect place to enjoy excellent food, really relax and take
in the beautiful surroundings.
As Alghero is located on a gorgeous sandy bay,
the lido beach is a busy place during the summer months. The majority of the
hotels in Alghero are located within a short walking distance of the lido beach
with some just across the road!
